Management of medical complications in a child with SAM presenting at a health facility

The majority of the deaths in the hospital occur within 24 hours of admission, many of these deaths can be prevented if the critically ill children are identified as soon as they are admitted and their treatment is started immediately.

A child with SAM and medical complications could come as a referral from a community health worker (ANM, AWW or SAHIYA) or from a peripheral health facility (PHC, CHC) or may come directly to the health facility (selfreferral). Each SAM child should be immediately screened to identify medical complications and its severity.
